I leaned a long time ago to be a man of my word. Growing up, I was often made promises, but they weren’t always kept.
It left a very bad taste in my mouth.
Thus, whenever I was able to assume a role of any kind of leadership or influence I made sure to deliver on my promises and keep my word. Once, a young man I was working with invited me to his graduation, and I didn’t give him a definite yes, because I knew that I was busy and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to honour my word. But I told his mother that I’d do my best to attend his graduation. At the last minute, I was able to switch some things around and I managed to attend his graduation after all. He was so excited that I was able to be there to support him. In that very moment, I realized that showing up for someone has a greater impact than you could ever imagine.
Who have you made promises to? Have you kept your word?
